Reports News Corp. to hire former AOL chief

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Miller’s new job would oversee all online operations including the popular MySpace social-networking site as well as the company’s investment in the also popular Hulu video site, according to a report late Friday on The Wall Street Journal.

Levinsohn will move to another job within News Corp. at the film and television studios, according to both news accounts.

In her Boomtown blog on the All Thing Digital Web site, Kara Swisher further explained Friday night that Miller is still bound by a non-compete agreement with Time Warner, which runs out in just a few days. She cited unnamed sources familiar with the situation saying a formal announcement could come Monday or Tuesday, at the latest.

News Corp. is about to hire former AOL Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Miller to head up the media conglomerate’s digital initiatives, replacing Peter Levinsohn, according several news reports, including two on News Corp.-owned publications.

Miller made headlines last year when Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes objected to his appointment to Yahoo’s board of directors.

The news was first reported on the Nikki Finke’s Deadline Hollywood Daily blog, as pointed out by Swisher. It was also substantiated by Ross Levinsohn, Miller’s business partner, on his own blog, which was also noted by Swisher.

Track best sellers with SmashBuys

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Track what's hot all over the Web with Smashbuys, a single page aggregator for products.

It was pitched to us as a PopUrls for products, which is very true, although Smashbuys users have the added benefit of seeing how popular each link is with the community. Items that get more clicks get their own form of promotion, making it pretty simple to see two layers of data at once. Go give it a spin.

Like top ten lists? You might like SmashBuys, a link aggregator of the best selling items on the Web. Sites included are Amazon, iTunes, VGchartz, and Downloads from Webware’s sister site Download.com. There are nine in all, and clicking any link will send you straight to the product page. You can also hover over any item to learn more about it.

Correction Etsy artists will not go into space, b

Monday, August 30th, 2010

OK, this makes more sense.

Unfortunately for any wannabe astronauts, it’ll be the winning artwork, not the artists, who get to go to space. Hoppin said later that he clarified the matter shortly thereafter, but that a malfunctioning microphone (there had been some sound issues earlier in the morning) may have that it wasn’t widely heard.

CNET News.com reported earlier on a collaboration between crafts site Etsy and the NASA Ames Research Center on a new contest that encourages members of the Etsy community to design NASA-inspired handmade goods. The announcement was made at the PSFK Conference in New York during a panel discussion featuring NASA’s Andrew Hoppin and Etsy founder Robert Kalin.

So if you’re an avid Etsy artist, you probably still won’t fulfill your dreams of going into orbit–but your crocheted pillows might.

In an unintended verbal gaffe, Kalin said, “We’ll send the two winners into space.” The audience, along with this reporter, assumed he meant that the Etsy crafters who won the contest would get to be astronauts–in this world of Microsoft space tourists and Virgin Galactic, it didn’t seem all that ridiculous.

PGP Whole disk encryption for Mac OS X is ‘in act

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Another problem with FileVault is that it hasn’t always been implemented that securely. Earlier versions of OS X didn’t encrypt the swapfile used for virtual memory, meaning the password could in many cases be easily extracted. And a paper (click for PDF) published last year by Jacob Appelbaum and Ralf-Philipp Weinmann found other potential security weaknesses.

I should also note here that a free volume encryption utility called TrueCrypt was released for OS X last week (it was previously available for Windows and Linux). TrueCrypt doesn’t do whole-disk encryption, but it does offer a way to conceal the fact that an encrypted volume exists–although that handy feature isn’t yet available on OS X and Linux.

This promises to be a boon for OS X users, especially laptop users who are more likely to lose their machines or run into snoopy border police and airport security guards who want to poke around the contents of their hard drives. Right now there’s no way for OS X users to encrypt their entire boot disks.

PGP Corp. is planning to release a version of its whole-disk encryption software for Apple Macintosh computers running OS X.

OS X already features FileVault, of course, but that focuses on encrypting the user’s home directory. Without whole-disk encryption, Unix-derived systems including OS X store in unencrypted form details about VPN usage, login times, and what applications are installed in the default location. Some applications including Thunderbird save working copies of documents in an unencrypted area outside the home directory.

PGP released its whole-disk encryption utility for Windows in May 2005. A perpetual license for PGP Whole Disk Encryption 9.8 for Windows costs $149.

Jon Callas, PGP’s chief technology officer, told me on Monday that the software is “in active development” and will run on Intel-based Macs. Callas didn’t want to elaborate on a shipping date, unfortunately.

Find the files you’re looking for by using virtual

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Repeat a search without re-entering the search criteria by using Windows XP's Save Search feature.

To create a virtual folder in Vista, click Start > Search, enter your search term (click the down arrow to the right of Advanced Search to see more options), and once the search is completed, click Save Search. By default, the new virtual folder is placed in the Searches folder under your user ID, along with Vista’s pre-built virtual folders: Recent Documents, Recent E-mail, Recent Music, Recent Images and Video, Recently Changed, and Shared by Me. You can save the new folder anywhere, but I find it simplest to keep all my virtual folders in one place.

A faster way to find a particular file among the gigabytes of data on your PC’s various storage media is to create virtual folders that store all the files matching specific search criteria. Vista even updates these folders for you automatically, though in XP you have to perform a new search to add recent files when you return to these folders.

Still, most people spend the majority of their file-management time in Windows Explorer, which by default isn’t particularly informative about the files and folders it displays. You can spend time tweaking Details view so that it shows more information about files and folders, or choose Thumbnails view to convert image-file icons to mini versions and to get a glimpse of up to four of the image files stored in a folder, but this still leaves the searching to you.

The more files you store on your PC, the harder they are to find and manage. A couple of weeks ago I wrote about Copernic Desktop Search, my favorite local-search freebie, and compared it to Google Desktop Search and Windows Desktop Search. All three retrieve the files you’re looking for much faster and more simply than Windows’ built-in search tool, but I prefer Copernic for its customizability and clean interface.

Tomorrow: Do desktop-search tools slow down your PC?

You can approximate Vista’s virtual folders in XP by clicking Start > Search, entering your search term in either or both of the two text boxes, choosing the drive or location to search, or using any of the other search options available, and clicking Search. When the search finishes, click File > Save Search, specify a location for your saved search file (the default is My Documents), give the file a name (or accepting Windows’ default name), and click Save. When you open that .fnd file subsequently, a search window opens with the specified criteria entered automatically, but with no files in the results window. Click Search to repeat the search.

Now whenever you’re looking for a file matching the criteria you specified, simply navigate to and select that virtual folder in the Searches folder under your user name to see an updated list of the files returned by the search.

By default, Vista places your new virtual folder in the same folder as its pre-built virtual folders.

You already use virtual folders all the time. Desktop, My Documents (or Documents in Vista), the Recycle Bin, and many other standard file “locations” in Windows are virtual. The contents of these folders don’t depend on the actual physical location of the files. In fact, the WinFS (Windows Future Storage) technology originally intended for use in Vista relies completely on virtual folders.

Zoho allowing import of Google Docs files

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Thursday’s announcement is a bit of a canard, though, because Zoho doesn’t read files from Google. Rather, if you follow these steps, you can get your Google docs in Zoho:

Log in to your Google Docs account and choose the documents that you need to export to Zoho
Click on More actions -> Save as HTML (zipped) to your desktop
In Zoho Writer, click on Import -> Import Google Docs, select the zipped file path and click Import
All the Google Docs documents in the zip file will be imported into your Zoho Writer account and will be displayed in the left panel.

(Instructions quoted verbatim from Zoho)

Zoho, which makes an online productivity suite, is now allowing the import of files from Google Docs.

If you want a real, two-way link between the app suites, you might want to check out Ghost, which I covered Wednesday. But is worth noting that you can now log in to Zoho with your Google ID.

In real Zoho news, the company’s word processor does have two real new features. First, it’s gotten an equation editor. Second, you can export documents in LaTex format, useful for academics and some engineering specialties.

Psystar launches Open Computer software updates

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

Among the updates, you’ll find fixes for iLife stability, an iTunes update, and a patch that lets you share the Open Computer’s CD or DVD drive with a MacBook Air. Each comes as a straightforward download, hosted directly by Psystar, which also says that it will ship all new OS X-based Open Computers with these updates preinstalled.

CNET)

In our review of the Psystar Open Computer, a non-Apple-sanctioned desktop that ships with Apple’s OS X pre-installed, we reported that Psystar planned to issue an ongoing series of software updates to address any incompatibilities that might arise. As reported by Information Week, those updates are now live, and available from Psystar for download.

We’re sure anyone who purchased an Open Computer is glad to know that Psystar remains committed to its maverick desktop. But although they offer excellent price-performance compared to any other sub-$1,000 Apple system (basically just the Mac Mini), these systems are not for the technically faint-of-heart due to their continued potential to lose functionality themselves or to stop working with your Apple-made accessories via an errant software update. That said, we also still think that the Open Computer must look very enticing to tech savvy enthusiasts looking for a more affordable OS X-based system.

Mozilla CEO says Apple’s Safari auto-update ‘wrong

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

Easy for users or a breach of trust?

Apple has made it incredibly easy–the default, even–for users to install ride along software that they didn’t ask for, and maybe didn’t want. This is wrong, and borders on malware distribution practices.

What’s different in what Apple is doing is that it is adding a product to the auto-update list that users never requested. That means they could very easily install software unintentionally, he argued:

Meanwhile, my colleague, Tom Krazit, in a post on Friday argues that people should become more aware of the software on their systems and think before they install.

(Credit:
CNET Networks)

In a blog on Friday, Mozilla CEO John Lilly criticized Apple’s practice, uncovered this week, of offering iTunes and QuickTime users Safari 3.1 on Windows through the Apple Software Update pop-up.

An Apple representative issued an e-mailed statement on the matter to Information Week: “We are using Software Update to make it easy and convenient for both
Mac and Windows users to get the latest Safari update from Apple.”

A lot of people appear to be bent out of shape about Apple using its auto-update service to distribute the
Safari Web browser on Windows. The CEO of Mozilla, which makes the rival
Firefox browser, calls it bad business.

Lilly says that automatic updates are a good way to ensure people have the most recent and secure versions of software. It’s a practice that Mozilla uses with the Firefox browser.

It’s wrong because it undermines the trust that we’re all trying to build with users. Because it means that an update isn’t just an update, but is maybe something more. Because it ultimately undermines the safety of users on the Web by eroding that relationship. It’s a bad practice and should stop.
